Family Story and Situation:
Verna and her family have faced a long string of losses and hardships. After Hurricane Helene in October 2024, her children lost their aunt Linda, followed by the passing of their Papaw in January 2025. More recently, their stepsister’s grandfather passed away, and their Nana just underwent surgery for a blocked artery and is preparing for another in December.
On top of the grief, Verna received an eviction notice on November 14. Her trailer has ongoing structural problems—roof leaks, damaged floors, and failing wall panels—which make it difficult to keep heat inside. She has tried to repair things herself using YouTube tutorials after helpers she trusted never finished the work.
Now the family has been without water for nearly two weeks because no electricity is reaching the well pump, and they are struggling to maintain basic living conditions. Despite everything, Verna is still pushing forward, doing everything she can to keep her children safe and provide some sense of normalcy.
